Managing Items

Getting Started with Item Management

Item Management is where you define, configure, and organize all the products or services you sell in your UltraCart store. Setting up your items correctly is a critical step to launching your online business.

Overview

The Item Management page is your main hub for managing your store's product catalog in UltraCart. From this central location, you can view, search, organize, and modify your items. This page is essential for day-to-day product operations, whether you're adjusting a price, uploading new inventory, or managing options.

You have two primary ways to add items to your store:

  • Manually Adding Individual Items: Best for adding a few items at a time. You click the "New Item" button and fill out the details page by page.

  • Batch Importing Items: Ideal for adding or updating many items simultaneously. You'll use a spreadsheet or data file to upload item information in bulk via the Import Items tool.

You'll also find a suite of tools at the top of the page, allowing you to take action on multiple items at once—such as importing data, generating barcodes, creating kits, or deleting items. This guide walks you through each available feature to help you work more efficiently.

Prerequisites

To access and configure Item Management, you must:

  • Have an active UltraCart account.

  • Be logged into the UltraCart dashboard.

  • If you’re not the owner of the UltraCart account you have access to items.

Core Concepts

Understanding these basic terms will help you navigate Item Management:

  • Item: A single product or service you sell in your store.

  • Item ID: A unique identifier assigned by you to each item (used internally and in links).

  • SKU (Stock Keeping Unit): A unique code often used to track inventory and sales, typically specific to variations of an item.

  • Folder: A way to group and organize items in your catalog within the Item Management interface. Folders help keep your item list tidy, especially as your catalog grows.

  • Kit: A collection of multiple individual items that are sold together as a single product.

Navigation

To access the Item Management page:

  1. Log in to your UltraCart account.

  2. In the main navigation menu, hover over Items and click on Item Management.

This will take you to the main Item Management list view where you can see existing items or add new ones.

Item Flexibility

UltraCart's Item Management is flexible enough to handle various types of products and services:

  • Physical Goods: Standard items that require shipping and inventory tracking.

  • Digital Items: Products like e-books, software downloads, or access codes that are delivered electronically. UltraCart can automate digital delivery.

  • Service Items: Offerings that don't involve shipping physical goods, such as consultations, subscriptions to a service, or event tickets.

  • Subscription Items: Configure recurring billing for products or services using the subscription settings within an item.

Using Buy Links

Buy Links are special URLs you can create in UltraCart that, when clicked, automatically add a specific item (or items) to a customer's shopping cart and can direct them to the checkout process. These links are often used on external websites, in emails, or in marketing materials to provide a direct path for customers to purchase a specific product without first Browse your storefront.

Getting Started Steps (Basic)

The most fundamental task in Item Management is creating a new item:

  1. Navigate to the Items page as described above.

  2. Click the Add + button or prepare a spreadsheet for the Import Items tool if adding many items.

  3. For a new item, fill in the essential details for your product, such as Item ID, Description, and Pricing information.

  4. Save the new item.

You can return to edit the item later to add images, configure inventory, set up shipping details, and more.

Conclusion

Item Management is the core of your product catalog in UltraCart. By creating and configuring your items here, you make them available for customers to view and purchase on your storefront.
