Managing and Processing Payments

Getting Started with Payment Processing

Accepting payments is a fundamental step for your online store. UltraCart provides flexible options to connect with various payment methods and gateways, ensuring a smooth checkout experience for your customers. This guide will walk you through the initial steps to set up payment processing in your UltraCart account.

Introduction

Setting up payment processing allows your customers to pay for their orders securely. UltraCart supports a variety of payment methods, including major credit cards, digital wallets like PayPal and Amazon Pay, and more. Configuring these options correctly is essential for your store's operation.

Prerequisites

Before you begin, you will need:

  • An active UltraCart account.

  • Depending on the payment methods you choose, you may need accounts with third-party payment processors or gateways (e.g., PayPal, Stripe, Authorize.net).

Step-by-step Instructions

This guide provides a high-level overview. You can find more detailed instructions in the linked sections.

  1. Navigate to Payment Methods Configuration:

    • From the UltraCart dashboard, go to Configuration.

    • Click on Checkout.

    • Select Payment Methods.

  2. Review Available Payment Methods:

    • On the Payment Methods screen, you will see recommended options like PayPal and Credit & Debit Cards listed at the top, followed by Advanced Payment Methods.

  3. Configure Recommended Payment Methods (PayPal and Credit/Debit Cards):

    • For the broadest options (Credit Cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.), configure PayPal:

      • Find the PayPal section.

      • Click the toggle switch to enable it.

      • Click the Connect button to link your PayPal account. Follow the prompts to complete the connection.

      • Ensure credit and debit card payments are enabled within your PayPal settings if you want customers to enter card details directly on your checkout page.

    • To use a specific payment gateway (like Stripe, Authorize.net) for Credit and Debit Cards:

      • Find the Credit and Debit Cards section.

      • Click the toggle switch to enable it.

      • Click the Connect Single button to configure your primary transaction gateway.

      • Select your gateway from the list and enter the required credentials provided by your gateway provider.

      • Save your configuration.

      • Select the specific card types (Visa, Mastercard, etc.) you accept by clicking their logos. Enabled card types will appear in full color, while disabled ones will be greyed out.

  4. Explore Advanced Payment Methods (Optional):

    • Scroll down to the Advanced Payment Methods section.

    • Here you can enable less common methods like Electronic Checks, Purchase Orders, etc., if they suit your business model.

    • Toggle the desired method to enable it and configure any specific settings required.

  5. Configure General Credit Card Settings:

    • Within the Credit and Debit Cards section, click the Settings button.

    • Review and configure settings like how the charge appears on the customer's statement, whether to charge during checkout (recommended), if you collect the CVV, and the behavior after failed attempts.

  6. Set Up Payment Restrictions (Optional):

    • If needed, click the Restrictions button for any payment method to set limitations based on order subtotal, customer location, or storefront.

  7. Utilize the Test Credit Cards and Test Gateway for Testing:

    • Before processing live transactions, you can use the UltraCart Test Gateway to simulate orders and test your setup without using real credit cards. Find this option in the Transaction Gateways section.

Tip: Be sure to copy the information provided by your gateway exactly into the appropriate fields, making sure that there are no unwanted spaces or characters. If this information is even slightly incorrect, payments will not be processed and an error will be displayed during checkout.

Conclusion

By configuring your payment methods and transaction gateways, you enable your UltraCart store to securely accept payments from customers. Starting with PayPal or a primary credit card gateway covers the most common payment types.
