Related Items

The Related Items feature is a powerful tool for cross-selling and up-selling products on your storefront. This guide will walk you through how to configure related items at the individual item level.


 

Overview

UltraCart's Related Items feature can be configured in two places:

  • Global Settings: Managed store-wide under Home → Configuration → Related Items.

  • Item-Level Settings: Specific to an individual item and found in the item editor.

This document focuses on the item-level settings. These configurations take priority over the global settings and are ideal for creating targeted recommendations.

 

Item-Level Settings

The Related Items tab in the item editor allows you to manually create associations between products. You can find this tab by navigating to Home → Item Management → Items, selecting an item, and clicking the Related Items tab.

UltraCart supports two types of relationships:

  • Manual Relationship: A direct association you define. You specify which products are related to the current item. These manually configured items are displayed to customers on the shopping cart page.

  • System-Calculated Relationship: An automated relationship based on purchasing data. UltraCart's system analyzes customer orders to identify products that are frequently bought together. These relationships are managed by UltraCart, but you can override them on a per-item basis.

 

Configuring a Manual Related Item

To manually associate a product, follow these steps:

  1. Navigate to the Related Items tab for the item you want to edit.

  2. In an empty row, enter the Item ID of the product you want to relate.

  3. In the TYPE column, select the relationship type from the dropdown menu.

In this example we are setting a relates item of Mens-Hoodie and the type will be Catalog/ Checkout. We will go into more about types below.

About Related Item Types

The type you choose determines where the related item will be displayed.

  • Catalog/Checkout: The related item will be presented to the customer during their normal shopping and checkout experience (e.g., on the shopping cart page).

  • My Account Auto Order Add-On: If the customer has an active auto-order, this item will be displayed as a suggested add-on in the Auto Order tab of their My Account portal. This gives them an easy way to add the item to a future recurring order.

 

Controlling Related Item Display

The Related Items tab also provides checkboxes to fine-tune how an item interacts with the system:

  • This item can not be related to other items: Check this box to completely exclude the current item from being used as a related item anywhere in your store.

  • Suppress system calculated relations: Check this box to disable UltraCart's automatic relationships for this specific item. You can use this to prevent items you don't want to recommend from appearing as a system-calculated related item.
